2) The information is taken by a school official and entered into a Youth Connection Charter School (YCCS) database and a lottery is drawn.

3) Student names that are selected in the lottery are called for an interview.

4) Final acceptance decision is made based on a student’s paperwork and their interview with the school.

• Social - from L. socialis “united, living with others,” Ecology “branch of science dealing with the relationship of living things to their environments…” (www.etymonline.com). Our school uses the term “social ecology” to help us understand the cause and effect between human beings and their environments. For example, we all live in this world, and this world has different environments – from one continent to another, as well as from one community to another. A person’s health and wellbeing – physical, emotional, and spiritual – has as much to do with a person’s decisions in life as it does to the environments in which that person is raised. A person is always a part of an ecosystem that they can both impact and also be impacted. The “social” in “social ecology” also helps us understand that environments are different – some better than others – because of human manipulation of those environments. Do you know how an environment can be impacted by a human being? Think of differences in housing, stores, community centers, employment, etc.

• Urban Agriculture is one example of a community taking control of its environment and making a positive impact on the members’ health and wellbeing. Urban agriculture in our community includes: a hydroponic greenhouse on our rooftop; other greenhouses on apartment rooftops along Division Street; a community edible garden at the Institute of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture in Humboldt Park; beautiful planters along Division Street; a community garden at the Casita de Don Pedro; community gardens throughout the neighborhood – like El Coquí on Rockwell and Crystal; a farmers market on Division Street; a food “cooperative” in La Municipal grocery store; families in their homes growing food in their yards and in their homes.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

It pleases me to inform you that several students made the “Principal’s List” because of their 4th quarter grades (having a 3.0 GPA or higher). Also, many students received a “Perfect Attendance” award for the month of April. We want to encourage students and their families to continue working hard to finish the school year on a strong note.

Accompanied with this letter, is your son/daughter’s progress report. This is not a report card with official grades. The grades that you see on the report are where your son/daughter are, academically, as of May 14. Please remind your son/daughter that they still have until June 16th to either keep their grades up or to get them up if they are low.

Here are some upcoming dates to keep in mind:

• Senior Awards Dinner: Friday, June 4th at 7pm, Casa Puertorriqueña
o (For staff and graduating seniors only – dress to impress)
• Prom Night: Friday, June 11th at 7pm, Humboldt Park Field house
o (For any interested Albizu Campos student – dress to impress)
• Last Day of School: Wednesday, June 16th
• Puerto Rican People’s Day Parade: Saturday, June 19th at 2pm
o (Division and Western and open to ALL!)
• Graduation: Tuesday, June 22nd at 10am, Humboldt Park Boathouse
o (For community and family – first come first serve seating)
