CHICAGO JOINS NATIONAL DAY OF SOLIDARITY WITH UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO: Educational Forum and March to be held in support of striking students

Chicago, IL- March 7, 2011 – Residents of Chicago, along with graduates of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) system, join in the activities of World Solidarity Day with UPR. UPR is the first public institution of higher learning in Puerto Rico. Since April of 2010, the student body at UPR has resorted to protests and strikes in response to the imposition of an $800 annual fee.

The current situation at the university and its context in the Puerto Rico of today will be discussed in a forum by a Group of panelists on Friday, March 11 at 6:00pm in Batey Urbano (2647 W Division St.). The forum’s purpose is to educate the community about the context of Puerto Rico today, the reasons for conducting the strike and the alternatives that the students have posed through the Student Representation Committee.

The establishment of the fee means that only those who can pay will study at UPR, thus increasing the gap between social classes. Despite the enormouse deficit that the UPR administration claims, the University has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in recent months in propaganda and legal counsel by private firms, even though the University has its own Legal Assistance Clinic.

The activity will incluye the participation of the following panelists: recent UPR graduate and doctoral student, Janitza Montalvo; sociologist and trade union lawyer, César Rosado; the sociologist, educador and UNESCO director, Manuel Torres Márquez; attorney Jan Susler; and by videoconference, members of Radio Huelga collective.

The students’ struggle goes beyond the $800 fee, incluyes the students’ demand for an active participation in the University’s administration, financial transparency and that the Police be removed from the campuses. UPR is going through one of its worste crises, and the students and graduates want to assure that UPR is an autonomous nacional project independent of political volatility.

The UIC SPH class of nearly 40 students broke into six groups of students to assess separate health areas identified by PACHS as important – gentrification/sense of belonging; issues of LGBTQ youth, physical activity, nutrition, young women’s sexual/reproductive health, and health literacy/diabetes. assessment modeling the assessment component of the Mobilizing Action through Planning and Partnerships (MAPP) process typically carried out by local health departments. Each group had at least two members engaged in an ongoing community learning experience so as to better discern community perspectives with respect to their health topic. The learning experience ranged from to engaging/facilitating small group learning to facilitating a schoolwide survey to volunteer coaching of a youth sports club. Existing quantitative data on population demographics, health status and health behavior were analyzed in light of qualitative data from key informant interviews, participant observation or focus groups (debriefing groups) gathered from community engaged learning experience characterizing/contextualizing the health topic. Preliminary findings were discussed at Humboldt Park Library 4/21 and 4/28.
