New Advisory Class !

Through collectivism, the Instructional and Social and Emotional Learning Teams created a pre-academic session, entitled Advisory Session, to ensure students are prepared for school and building cooperative support structures for academic achievement. This process is defined by students “checking-in” with homework, materials, student planner, and social and emotional readiness.

The academic component is reinforced through democratic dialogues to strengthen the students’ awareness of school, community, and communication. The curriculum is designed to meet the Illinois State Standards in Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), which targets self-awareness, relationship building, and organizing for success.

YCCS Rewards High Scores

After their all-day testing, one of our Juniors was rewarded with a $400 gift card to Best Buy! The student, D’Angelo Luciano rejoiced with pride when he was informed of how he exceeded the Illinois State Benchmarks on his ACT test. Many colleges look at a students’ ACT score as a measurement of their “aptitude” to do well. With his high score, Mr. Luciano will be sought after by many Colleges and Universities.

With the help of our College Transition Specialist, D’Angelo Luciano will also be working on scholarship applications for when he graduates. With proof of being enrolled in college, YCCS has committed to provide $200 more toward D’Angelo’s education.

This year, twenty students are scheduled to take the same State tests that D’Angelo Luciano took. All of these students will be informed, and will have the same opportunity to receive rewards for their achievement. This year, the test will take place in April.

Congratulations to D’Angelo Luciano and his family, keep working hard!

I.C.E. Rally

Students and staff of Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos HS, took the time to participate in the ICE rally on January 21st.

The march for Family Unity, Wednesday, January 21 12pm(noon) I.C.E. Building, 101 W. Congress Pkwy March BEGAN in front of I.C.E and ENDED at the Methodist temple 773-782-8379

The “Ya Basta” Coalition of Latino Leaders, representing over 60 organizations, churches, agencies, and Latino Elected Officials, joined the national call for demonstrations. They called on President Barack Obama to declare a moratorium. This would put an immediate stop to the raids, deportations and separation of families until a just comprehensive immigration reform is implemented as promised in the first 90 days of Obama’s new administration.

Saul and Hector’s class goes to the Newberry Library Spring 2008

In the Spring of 2008, Saul and Hector’s class got the opportunity to curate an exhibit at the Newberry Library in Chicago. Students handled documents that dated back to the 1600′s. They picked and labeled the exhibit in bilingual descriptions. Students were able to see how the world was seen many years ago. This lesson lent itself very nicely to critical thinking skills, because students needed to infer what perspectives of Puerto Rico was.
