Physical Education Classes
Purpose: “Wiping out obesity as a community”
2009-10 PE classes
The 2009-10 PE classes have seen the martial arts and boxing classes lose interest, but the basketball and soccer teams have become more competitive and organized. The cooking classes had so much popularity that our English teacher was able to create a spin off of the class called “Healthy Eating on a budget.” Our school continues to challenge the norm of Latino and African American families with high prevalence of diabetes and asthma. We have made PE a stable time of the week, trying to teach the importance of regular exercise. Our staff volunteer to teach these classes understanding the importance of breaking the cycles of diabetes and asthma we see on a daily basis.
2008-09 PE classes
The 2008-09 Season of PE classes picked up where last year’s classes left off. We had classes where students could engage in healthy lifestyle choices. Our staff found ways to make a variety of classes that would keep our student population. There were classes on Bomba, nutrition, martial arts, boxing, competitive basketball and soccer teams, support groups to focus on mental health, cooking taught by a neighborhood restaurant owner, ping pong/billiards, gardening groups and more (see some photos below).
The 2007-2008 season marked the rebirth of a sports legacy known as the Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos HS sports program. The basketball team made its long-awaited return to the community, and the school saw its first soccer team commence. On May 28, 2008 we participated in the 2008 YCCS Olympics.
