Mission
Founded in 1973, the Puerto Rican Cultural Center Juan Antonio Corretjer is a non-profit,
community-based umbrella institution, which seeks to serve the social/cultural needs of
Chicago’s Puerto Rican/Latino community. It is built on the following principles: a philosophy
of self-determination, a methodology of self-actualization and critical thought, and an ethics of
self-reliance best expressed in the motto, “To Live and Help To Live.”
Vision
Based in the predominantly Puerto Rican/Latino community of Humboldt Park, The Puerto
Rican Cultural Center serves as a place where people come together to address the critical
social problems confronting the community, to actualize solutions, and to share in the music,
poetry, and drama of Puerto Rico and artist in the diapora. The Puerto Rican Cultural Center
houses an alternative high school; operates a childcare center, an adult education and literacy
program, an HIV/STD risk-reduction and prevention project, a library and a museum of Puerto
Rican history and culture; and also organizes cultural events such as Fiesta Boricua and the
Puerto Rican People’s Parade.
