New safety initiative that promotes parent involvement

DSC_2896 Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos Puerto Rican High School has always prided itself in finding alternative strategies to address the needs of our community and this year the school has developed a unique alternative to keep our students safe, while encouraging parent involvement.

Beginning in September parents have been invited to provide security for our students, while also earning money towards their child’s school tuition. For every 4.5 hour shift a parent works, he or she can earn $40. After completing 5 days of security work, a parent can pay off their child’s entire $200 tuition fee.

One of our community’s realities is gang violence, which especially affects the local youth. Attending a multi-building school campus, Albizu Campos students find themselves walking along the streets during various periods of the day making security an important component of maintaining a safe school environment.

This initiative not only gives our parents an alternative to paying their child’s tuition, which is an increasing challenge during the tough economic situation facing this country, but it also helps empower our school community by using our resources to make our school safe without solely relying on the aid of the police and/or other outside agencies.

We are also extremely excited about this initiative because it gives our parents the opportunity to learn more about our school, build stronger relationships with our staff, and ultimately feel more connected to the school community. The Albizu Campos high school staff also recognizes the extreme importance and benefit of parent involvement in a child’s education. We encourage all parents to join this initiative and help keep our student safe while building community!
